For critical feedback on a master's thesis before your advisor reads it, use a reader who comments on content: a writing center, a fellow student or an AI review tool. Esmond reads your paper or thesis the way your teacher will: factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies, flagged before you submit. It adds no text to your work.
Critical feedback is a comment that names a specific problem in a specific passage, so you can check it and decide what to change. "The argument seems weak" gives you little to do. "Your conclusion relies on a result that your Table 2 doesn't show" gives you a place to start.
A review round with your advisor or committee can take time. Fresno State's thesis rules say “Committee members are responsible for reviewing thesis and dissertation drafts, and providing feedback in a timely manner.” They add that, depending on circumstances, there should be no more than “a four-week turnaround” per committee member. Your own program may differ, so ask. A first reader can catch what you could have fixed yourself before that clock starts.

| Reader | What it looks at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Writing center or fellow student | Organization, argument and whether a reader can follow you | Limited time per session, and a reader outside your field may miss field-specific problems |
| Evaluative AI | Factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies, from within your broad field | Your rules may cover it too, and comments can be wrong, so check each one against your data |
| Human editor | Language and style, within limits your program sets | An editor isn't there to test your argument |
| Grammar tool | Spelling, grammar and wording | Finds nothing wrong with a claim your data can't support |
| Generative AI, tools that write for you | Your prompt, and it can answer with new text | Your rules may not permit it, and text it adds isn't your work |
An advisor reads for more than language. Does the conclusion answer the question you asked? Does the evidence support the claims? Do the chapters agree with each other? Esmond flags problems of this kind in your draft and adds questions an advisor or committee member might ask.
It doesn't predict what your advisor will say, and it doesn't replace that conversation. Your advisor knows your project, your program and your field in a way no tool does, and your advisor and committee make the final decision.
A narrow request gets a better answer. UNC's Writing Center says of faculty: “Faculty can be especially generous and helpful with their advice when you drop by their office with specific questions and know the kinds of help you need.” The same holds for a peer or a consultant. Say what stage the draft is in and which part worries you.
You don't have to wait for a finished thesis. Jackson State's writing center offers students the chance to “Get feedback at any stage of a research project (e.g., proposal, literature review, methodology, results, discussion)”. Check what your own school offers, because many writing centers serve only their own students.
Find out before you upload anything. Some programs have rules on AI tools and on outside help, and these rules can cover feedback. Ask with a narrow question, naming the tool and the chapter, and keep the answer. Can I get AI feedback on my thesis? goes through who decides, and the AI disclosure statement page shows how a use can be reported.
Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Esmond is an AI tool that doesn't write for you. If your course doesn't allow any AI tools, don't use Esmond for that work. If you're unsure, ask your instructor or advisor.
Most reviews are ready in minutes, so you can run one the week before a meeting and still have time to act on it. The sample report shows what comes back, and How Esmond works covers what you upload.
Use one that comments on content and adds no text, and check first that your rules permit it. Esmond is built for this: it flags factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies in your draft.
Not for a writing center or a fellow student, who can read one chapter. For an AI review, a full draft gives the most to compare, and a comment about something missing can simply mean it falls outside the file you uploaded.
No. Your advisor and committee decide what your thesis needs. A first reader can help you see what to bring to them.
Most Esmond reviews are ready in minutes. Leave yourself time to check the comments and change your draft before you send it on.
