The cost of a thesis review depends on who reads it. Writing centers at schools such as UCLA don't charge their own students. A freelance editor often charges by the word: 2026 median rates for student academic copyediting run from 3 to 5.5 cents per word. Many online AI tools bill per document or per month.
No one sees their own blind spots, with or without AI help. Esmond points them out in your draft from within your field, along with factual errors and inconsistencies.
These readers look for different things, so a low cost only helps if that reader can answer your question. Who can review my thesis? compares what each one looks at.
| Reader | What you pay | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Your advisor and committee | Nothing extra: reading your thesis is part of their role in your program | Comments on your draft, and in the end the decision |
| Your school's writing center | No charge at the schools named below, for their own students | A conversation about part of your draft, and you make the changes |
| A fellow graduate student | Your time, often in exchange for reading their chapter | Questions from someone who knows your field |
| A freelance editor | From about 3 cents per word for copyediting, by the 2026 ranges below | Work on your language or structure, within limits you agree on first |
| An AI tool that comments on content | Often per document or per month, and some tools have a no-cost tier | Comments on your draft with no text added, and each one can be wrong |

Get a free previewThe Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), a US association, surveys its members and publishes median rate ranges. Its 2026 chart draws on more than 1,100 members reporting on their work in 2025, and response counts varied widely per question. It is a survey and sets no fee: “the EFA neither sets rates nor advises members on what rates or rate types to use.” For student academic work, the chart lists these ranges:
| Type of edit | Humanities, per word | STEM, per word | Per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copyediting | 3 to 4.5 cents | 3 to 5.5 cents | 45 to 60 dollars |
| Line editing | 4 to 5.1 cents | 3.6 to 5.7 cents | 50 to 72.50 dollars |
| Developmental editing | 4 to 6 cents | 5 to 7.5 cents | 50 to 75 dollars |
Multiplying the per-word rates by the word count gives a rough total. We worked these figures out ourselves from the chart, across humanities and STEM. They are estimates, and an editor's quote can differ.
| Type of edit | 20,000-word thesis | 60,000-word dissertation |
|---|---|---|
| Copyediting | 600 to 1,100 dollars | 1,800 to 3,300 dollars |
| Line editing | 720 to 1,140 dollars | 2,160 to 3,420 dollars |
| Developmental editing | 800 to 1,500 dollars | 2,400 to 4,500 dollars |
The EFA says so itself: “Individual members’ rates may vary considerably, depending on multiple factors, including type of work, turnaround time, degree of expertise, local cost of living, training, and years of experience.” Outside the US, rates can follow other markets.
The way you are billed can differ too. Editors Canada describes two common forms: “Sometimes the fee is calculated as an hourly rate; other times it is calculated as a flat project fee, often based on the word count of the document.” An hourly quote leaves the total open, so ask for an estimate in writing.
Developmental editing costs the most and goes furthest into your content, so ask your advisor first whether your program allows it. Who can review my thesis? quotes guidelines that limit what an editor may change in a graduate student's text.
UCLA's Graduate Writing Center offers appointments at no charge to all registered UCLA graduate and professional school students. UC Riverside's offers workshops and consultations at no charge to its graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and the University of Mississippi's writing centers do the same for their students.
At UCLA, “Writing consultants are happy to work on issues ranging from organization and argumentation to grammatical issues”, and they don't work as copy-editors. Expect to cover a thesis in parts. At Mississippi, consultants “may not be able to review an entire draft of a paper if it exceeds 1500-2000 words”, so plan several appointments. Check your own school's page, because who qualifies and what it offers differ.
That depends on what you wanted from the editor. For clean language, a colleague can read for errors, and a copyeditor can work on the chapters that need it most. A writing center won't correct your text. For questions about your argument, you can ask your advisor, a writing center, a colleague or an AI tool that comments on content.
A lower cost can leave things out, so check these before you decide:
Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Each Esmond purchase covers one document and one review, and the amount depends on the length of the document. A document can have up to about 125 pages, so a longer dissertation goes in parts, each with its own review. There is no monthly fee. The box at the end of this page shows the lowest amount.
It reads your own paper, capstone, thesis or dissertation from within your field and points out factual errors, inconsistencies and blind spots, with comments next to the passages they are about. It does no language editing, so it doesn't do an editor's work. The feedback is generated by AI and can contain errors.
Esmond is an AI tool that doesn't write for you. If your course doesn't allow any AI tools, don't use Esmond for that work. If you're unsure, ask your instructor or advisor.
How Esmond works covers what you upload, and the sample report shows what comes back.
By the 2026 EFA ranges for student academic work, copyediting comes to about 600 to 1,100 dollars. That is our own calculation from the per-word rates, and an editor's quote can differ.
Not at the schools named on this page, for their own students. Expect to work through a thesis in parts, and check your own school's page, because who qualifies differs.
They do different work. A copyeditor works on language, and a developmental editor also works on structure and content. A tool that comments on content adds no text and leaves the changes to you.
Yes, if your rules allow it. Many online AI tools bill per document or per month, and some have a no-cost tier. The University of Mississippi's writing centers also meet online, for its own students. Check what you get back and what happens to your file.
