A cheaper alternative to a thesis editor is a grammar tool or a fellow student for language; for content, which copyeditors leave alone, try a writing center or an AI review tool. Esmond reads your paper or thesis the way your teacher will: factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies, flagged before you submit. It adds no text to your work.
A thesis editor is a person you pay to work on the language and style of your thesis, within the limits your program sets. Copyediting covers grammar, spelling and consistency. Developmental editing goes further into structure and costs more, and your program may not allow it for work that counts toward your degree.
Even a language edit has limits on a student's text. Guidelines from the Editors' Association of Canada, written for doctoral theses, tell editors to leave content and structure alone. They add: “Rather than drafting alterations under these standards, the editor should depend on queries to the author”. So an editor who follows them leaves many decisions with you. Before you look for a cheaper option, work out which of these jobs you wanted done.

|---|---|---|---|
| Human editor | Language and style, within limits | Your content and structure, under the guidelines above | By the word, hour or project |
| Grammar tool | A first pass on spelling and grammar | Judge your style for your field, or check what you claim | Often a monthly fee |
| Writing center or fellow student | A reading of your organization and argument | Correct your text, and time per session is limited | Often nothing, for its own students |
| Generative AI, tools that write for you | New or reworded text on request | Give you text that counts as your own work, and your rules may not permit it | Often a monthly fee |
| Evaluative AI | A reading of your content before your advisor sees it | Language editing, and comments can be wrong. Your rules may cover it too | Per document or per month, depending on the tool |
For language, a cheaper option means doing more of the work yourself:
If your question is about your claims and your evidence, an editor won't answer it. Under the guidelines quoted above, the editor stays out of your content and structure. Your advisor and committee care about those first, and a writing center consultant or an AI review tool can comment on them.
Esmond is an example of the second. You get your own PDF back with comments in the margin, and you decide what to do with each one. It reads for factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies from within your broad field. AI that checks the content of your thesis has examples of such comments.
An editor can be worth the cost if you are working in a second language and your committee has raised language as a problem, or if you have settled your content and want the final version clean. Order matters either way: settle the content first and pay for language last, so you don't pay to polish a paragraph you later cut.

Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Esmond is an AI tool that doesn't write for you. If your course doesn't allow any AI tools, don't use Esmond for that work. If you're unsure, ask your instructor or advisor.
Esmond does no language editing, so it doesn't do an editor's work. You pay per document, with no monthly fee. The sample report shows what comes back, How Esmond works covers what you upload, and Can I use Esmond? lists what to check first.

No. Esmond comments on content and does no language editing. If you need corrected sentences, you still need a grammar tool or an editor.
Usually not. Writing centers work with you on your text and don't correct it for you. Check what your own center offers.
It may. Ask your advisor before you pay anyone or upload anything, and keep the answer.
