A senior thesis is an extended, independent research or creative project that an undergraduate completes during senior year, working with a faculty director or advisor. Some schools tie it to honors, and others offer it as an option. The rules vary by school and department, so your own program's guide comes first.
The University of Delaware's handbook separates the two by the question: “Unlike most term projects, papers, and lab reports written in undergraduate courses, a Senior Thesis addresses questions or issues for which no known or generally accepted answers exist.” The South Carolina Honors College describes its place in a degree: “The Senior Thesis is designed to be the culminating experience of a student’s career at the South Carolina Honors College.”
At Delaware and South Carolina, that means you pick the question, you work on it across your final semesters, and a thesis director and at least one other reader see the result.
Tufts' civil and environmental engineering department says: “The primary emphasis of the honors thesis is quality of work, and the typical length ranges from 40-60 pages (12 pt. font, double-spaced, one-inch margins).” Treat these figures as examples from those departments, and check your program's guidelines.
| School | Committee and proposal | Length and defense |
|---|---|---|
| University of Delaware | A thesis director and committee members | A formal oral defense; see its handbook for length by field |
| South Carolina Honors College | A proposal, a thesis director, and a second reader | A required defense of the project |
| Tufts, civil and environmental engineering | A written proposal to the thesis committee | An oral presentation, followed by questions; see the length quoted below |
| Tufts, computer science | Set by the department | “Length: Minimum of 30-40 pages.” A talk with questions from the committee |
Earlier than senior year. Delaware says preparation can begin in your sophomore year, through course papers, research skills courses, or work with a faculty mentor. That lets you pick junior and senior courses that support the project. Look up your own department's steps and deadlines at the start of junior year.
Schools use these words differently. At some, an honors thesis is the same document as a senior thesis, required for a degree with honors. At others, every senior completes a capstone, and the thesis is a separate track. The University of Georgia's forestry school contrasts team projects with an individual thesis for students with prior research. See capstone vs. thesis for how some programs split the two.
Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Esmond reads a senior thesis at the undergraduate level, because you tell it your level when you start. It comments where your thesis doesn't clearly answer the question you set and where a claim goes beyond your material. Your thesis director and readers decide what counts as finished.
It depends on your school and major. Some require it for all seniors in a major, and others only for honors. Your department's handbook will say.
There is no general length. The Tufts departments above publish their own figures, and other departments set theirs. Check your department's guidelines.
Not in every field. A history thesis may work from archives and a literature thesis from texts. What matters at Delaware is a question without a known answer.
South Carolina's Honors College allows it. Other schools may not, so ask your advisor.
