A thesis usually sets out to add new knowledge through original research. A capstone usually shows that you can apply what your program taught you, often to a practical problem. The definitions vary by program, and some programs require neither, so the definition that counts is the one in your own handbook.
The University of Oregon's graduate school puts it this way: “While a thesis typically focuses on generating new knowledge through original research, a terminal project or capstone is designed to demonstrate mastery of the skills and concepts learned throughout the program.” Not every master's program asks for one: “Depending on the program, students may be required to complete one of these culminating experiences or, in some cases, none at all.”
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) starts from what the two share: “In many ways a thesis and a capstone are similar.” Both state a problem, review the literature, collect data or carry out a project, analyze results, and reach a conclusion. OHSU then states the difference: “The primary difference lies in the scope and the focus of the project.” Its thesis should apply beyond a single setting, while its capstone answers a practical question within a particular agency or practice setting.
These are published examples from different fields. Your program can differ on any row.
| Program | Thesis | Capstone or project |
|---|---|---|
| University of Oregon, master's programs | “At least 9 credits of Thesis 503 are required.” Formal structure, reviewed by the graduate school and published | Format set by the program: papers, presentations, portfolios, or other work; publication optional |
| OHSU, nutrition | New knowledge in the field, applicable beyond one setting | “A capstone project is a six-credit, independent project that will be performed under the close supervision of the capstone advisor.” |
| University of Colorado Colorado Springs, public service | “The thesis involves two semesters rather than one.” “Students interested in pursuing a thesis must have a cumulative UCCS GPA of 3.50 or higher.” | A partner agency and a team of readers |
| University of Cincinnati, nutrition | “MS students must complete a Capstone Project or Thesis reflective of 10 credit hours, respectively to meet graduation requirements.” A thesis can be submitted as a journal article | Usually smaller in scope, and not in the state thesis repository |
The same two words appear at the undergraduate level, with their own meanings. At the University of Georgia's forestry school, “Senior Project involves teams of 3-4 students working together on basic or applied research, management planning, or outreach.” Its senior or honors thesis is an individual research project with its own academic requirements and a formal proposal. For more on that track, see what a senior thesis is.
| If it is a capstone | If it is a thesis |
|---|---|
| Do you describe the setting and who the work is for? | Do you name the gap in the literature your question addresses? |
| Does each recommendation follow from what you found in that setting? | Does your conclusion say what your work adds? |
| Do you say what would change in another setting? | Do you say who your findings apply to, and who they don't? |
| Can your partner or client act on the result as you present it? | Could another researcher follow your method? |
Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Esmond has no separate capstone setting. It looks at how your claims relate to your own material and comments where a recommendation or conclusion clearly goes beyond that material. Whether your project meets your program's requirements is up to your advisor and committee.
They are different kinds of work. In the programs above, a thesis can mean more credits or more semesters, and a capstone can mean working with an outside partner and its deadlines. Ask students in your program which demands they found harder.
It depends on the program. OHSU's capstone ends with a presentation open to the public and final approval from a committee. Check your handbook.
Ask your advisor and your program director. The timing and the paperwork are set by your program.
At Oregon, publication is optional for a project and required for a thesis. Cincinnati's project doesn't go in the state repository. Check where your own work will end up.
