To review a dissertation draft chapter by chapter with AI, upload each chapter as its own PDF to a tool that comments and adds no text, or upload the whole draft. Esmond reads your paper or thesis the way your teacher will: factual errors, blind spots and inconsistencies, flagged before you submit. It adds no text to your work.
If your AI statement clearly doesn't cover what you describe elsewhere in your thesis, Esmond points it out.
An AI dissertation review is a reading of your draft by an AI tool that returns comments on the content and leaves every sentence to you. What it can compare depends on what you upload:
| What you upload | What the review can compare | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| The whole draft, up to about 125 pages | All chapters against each other: a sample, a definition or a finding that changes between them | You have a full draft and want to see where the parts disagree |
| One chapter as its own PDF | That chapter only, since it can't see the others | You are still drafting chapter by chapter, or your advisor asked for changes in one chapter |
| A longer dissertation in parts | Each part on its own, with its own review | The text is over the limit. Keep chapters that depend on each other in the same part |
A hypothetical example of a commentChapter 2 defines burnout with three dimensions, but your Chapter 4 instrument measures only exhaustion. How does your conclusion deal with the difference?
A first comment on one part of your own draft, right away and without an account.
Get a free previewEsmond's comments sit in the margin of your PDF, next to the passages they are about, so you go through them chapter by chapter as you read. A comment it can't place appears only in the report. You also get a list of what to tackle first and questions a committee member might ask. A separate overview for each chapter isn't part of every review, because that depends on your document.
If you want a review per chapter, upload the chapters one at a time. Each upload is its own review and its own purchase.
Chapters depend on each other. A dissertation guide from George Washington University's education school says “Parts of Chapter 1 summarize your Chapters 2 and 3”, so a change in your methods can leave your introduction out of date. A guide from Valdosta State warns that “Chapter 5 is often the weakest one in the first draft of the completed dissertation.”
| Kind of help | What it does with your chapters | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI, tools that write for you | Can produce new text for a chapter | Doctoral rules can limit or ban this, and your committee can ask about any part of it |
| Grammar tool | Corrects the language, page by page | Doesn't compare what your chapters claim |
| Human editor | Works on language and style, usually at the end | Your school may set limits, and a full dissertation takes time and budget |
| Evaluative AI | Comments on content and adds no text | Your rules may cover it too, comments can be wrong and your committee decides what the dissertation needs |
An early chapter benefits from comments on whether your reasoning can support what comes next. A complete draft benefits from a reading across chapters, since contradictions show up only once all of them exist. Before your defense, the questions in the review can show you what to prepare, and the thesis defense questions page gives more to test yourself on.
At upload, the dissertation option is for PhD or doctoral work only, and the review reads at that level. If your master's program calls your final work a dissertation, choose thesis, and upload the full draft where you can, because a comment about something missing can simply mean it falls outside the file. Thesis vs. dissertation explains why the words differ. The feedback follows general academic standards, so your committee's expectations may differ.
Esmond evaluates every assignment before you submit. It never writes it.
Esmond is an AI tool that doesn't write for you. If your course doesn't allow any AI tools, don't use Esmond for that work. If you're unsure, ask your instructor or advisor.
If your draft holds unpublished results or participant data, ask your advisor first and read How Esmond works to see who sees your paper. Can I use Esmond? lists what to check, and the sample report shows what comes back.
Yes. Upload each chapter as its own PDF and you get a review per upload. Esmond comments on content and adds no text. Your rules decide whether you may use it.
Only what is in the same upload. To find contradictions between chapters, upload them together.
A document can have up to about 125 pages. A longer dissertation goes in parts, each with its own review.
No. You get your own PDF back with comments in the margin, and every change is yours to make.
